Although he has been living in Berlin for a few months, the American drummer Joe Smith has left his mark on Barcelona, as well as a good number of friends there. Known for introducing unusual melodies into his compositions based on patterns of instant music, in 2002 Joe Smith conceived a project – Melodic Workshop – based on creating pieces with an unconventional methodology far from classic, academic patterns. In 2003 he recorded an eponymous album on the Fresh Sound label in the company of Bill McHenry and Gorka Benitez on saxophones, Chris Lightcap on double bass, Guillermo Klein on piano and Jorge Rossy on the drums. After a long silence during which, among other achievements, he started the sadly missed Asociación Libre Orkesta, in 2011 he decided to return to the project with the same vigour he showed ten years ago.
