Description
Leslie Helpert vocals and guitar, David Mengual piano, Giulia Valle double-bass, Oriol Roca drums.
Along with Ella Fitzgerald and Sara Vaughan, she is one of the fundamental symbols of vocal jazz. An iconic image of Afro-American culture, this year she would have celebrated her 95th birthday. An unforgettable face, deep, subtle and sensual voice who became a celebrity as of the 1930’s when she was discovered by Benny Goodman. Billie Holliday shared the stage with all the great jazzmen of her time: Lester Young, Count Bassie and Artie Shaw. A controversial figure, she hit it big with the song “Strange Fruit”, considered the best song of the 20th century by Time magazine. Behind this tribute to Holliday will be a singer with a deep-felt voice, Leslie Helpert, who claims to hail from the minor outlying islands far from the United States. She has played in clubs like Yoshi’s in California or CBGB’s in New York.. She is a muse of Barcelona’s deepest underground. Simply perfect for a tribute to Lady Day.
