Along with Ella Fitzgerald and Sara Vaughan, she is one of the fundamental symbols of vocal jazz. An iconic image of Afro-American culture, this year she would have celebrated her 95th birthday. An unforgettable face, deep, subtle and sensual voice who became a celebrity as of the 1930’s when she was discovered by Benny Goodman. Billie Holliday shared the stage with all the great jazzmen of her time: Lester Young, Count Bassie and Artie Shaw. A controversial figure, she hit it big with the song “Strange Fruit”, considered the best song of the 20th century by Time magazine. Behind this tribute to Holliday will be a singer with a deep-felt voice, Leslie Helpert, who claims to hail from the minor outlying islands far from the United States.
