Music concert ANDRÉ SUMELIUS QUARTET in Barcelona

ANDRÉ SUMELIUS QUARTET
Presentation of the album “Victory Songs”
André Sumelius drums and composition, Ernesto Aurignac alto sax, Alexi Tuomarila piano, Marko Lohikari double bass.
Gradually, the musicians from the most avant-garde European jazz scene – that is, the Scandinavian countries – are gathering strength in our city, particularly at the Jamboree. The drummer André Sumelius, a follower of Toni Williams and sideman to Dayna Stephens, Marcus Shelby and Julian Lage, among others, leads this well-known quartet which includes the recognised saxophonist from our jazz scene Ernesto Aurignac, an accompanist of Chano Domínguez; the pianist Alexei Tuomarila, who has worked for Tomasz Stanko, and the double bass player Marko Lohikari, one of the best string players on the new Barcelona jazz scene. Together, they form a top-level quartet, moving between tradition and the most innovative patterns. Sumelius, awarded the Prize for the Best Album of the Year in Finland for his first album, “Kaira” (2003) offers us compositions from his latest CD, “Victory Songs”, which will certainly not go unnoticed among critics and fans.
