An outstanding figure among the latest generations of American jazz is the saxophonist JD Allen, a musician with a robust sound born in Detroit in 1972 and trained in New York, working as a sideman for Betty Carter, Lester Bowie, Ron Carter, George Cables, David Murray and Butch Morris, among others. Allen has been a travelling companion of Cindy Blackman, Eric Reves, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jeremy Pelt, Gerald Cleaver and Dave Douglas. In 1999 he made his debut with the disc In Search Of... (Red Records), for which he received the award for Best New Artist. He then began a highly-praised career with many awards for works like Pharoah’s Children (Criss Cross, 2002), I AM – I AM (Sunnyside, 2008) or, his latest CD, The Victory! (Sunnyside, 2011), picked out by the prestigious magazine DownBeat. Another publication, the newspaper The New York Times told JD Allen that his is “tenor sax with an enigmatic, elegant and intricate style”. This is an appropriate definition for a jazzman who, in a trio formation and without harmonic instrumentation, promises fans a magical night.
