The development of the double bass in jazz history is difficult to understand without the figure of Ray Brown, who was the four-string player in the legendary Oscar Peterson trio for many years as well as being the discoverer of talents of the calibre of Monty Alexander, John Clayton, Gene Harris or, more recently, Christian McBride. The creator of a never-before-heard melodic style, Brown became a reference for different generations of double bass players such as Nils Henning Orsted Pedersen (NHOP), John Clayton, Chris McBride or Manel Álvarez, a follower of Pierre Boussaguet, Javier Colina and Kengo Nakamura who has played with Phil Woods, Jesse Davis, Nicholas Payton, Frank Wess, Wendell Brunius, Benny Golson, Ann Hampton Calloway, Ignasi Terraza, Oriol Bordas or the Barcelona Jazz Orquestra. Álvarez, who currently lives between London and Barcelona, has formed his own trio in order to keep alive the flame of one of the greatest double bass players of all time.
