Description

A true all-time legend of jazz, the composer of pieces like “I Remember Clifford”, will walk down the stairs of Jamboree. Benny Golson will offer one of those sessions that makes the history of the Plaça Reial venue even greater. Born in Philadelphia in 1929, he blew a saxophone for the first time when he fell in love with the style of Arnett Cobb. He studied at Howard College in Washington and, at the beginning of the fifties, he came to form part of Tadd Dameron’s band, where he shared the stage with Philly Joe Jones, Cecil Payne and the trumpeter Clifford Brown. In 1956 he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s big band and, in 1958, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. In 1959 he founded the Jazztet group, an emblematic sixties jazz band, with the trumpeter Art Farmer. In his fertile career, Golson has had Gillespie, Farmer, George Russell and Roland Kirk working alongside him. He is known for his innovative phrasing and, above all, for his facet as a composer. And there is a good reason for this: he has written numbers as well known as “Blues March”, “Whisper Not” and “Stablemates”. A piece of living history!
