Recovering names from the oblivion into which they have fallen for all sorts of reasons is one of the noblest tasks a cultural community can undertake. In the case that concerns us – that of Catalan musical creativity – there is unfortunately more than a little work to be done. The Barcelona violinist and composer Joan Manén (and, with him, his music) is one of the figures who, in the last few months, has inspired the creation of various organisations bearing the names of our composers, which, with varying degrees of ability, are trying to recover them with activities including support for publicising their work. With today’s event, the Mas i Mas foundation intends to make use of the power of a important date to show its support for initiatives like this one. Nor does the symbolism end there: as one of its principal elements, the concert programme presents a performance of “Nova Catalònia”, a symphonic poem the first version of which was premiered at the Líric Theatre in 1900, when the composer was only – believe it or not – seventeen years old. It would be wonderful if the title of this work could become prophetic and stimulate us, in these difficult times, to make the most of the opportunity behind every crisis. It would be wonderful if, from now on, Catalonia did not have to go without music of its greatest sons.
