This week’s star line-up at the Tarantos sails between two ports – one bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and the other by the Mediterranean Sea – to bring together two figures in flamenco dancing from two different cultures and cities where the art has equally strong roots. From El Puerto de Santa María, a town near Cádiz with a big cantaora tradition, comes Juan Fernández, a young bailaor with firm footwork and an elegant stamp who trained in flamenco, classical and modern dancing with figures including Manoloa Marín, Eva Yerbabuena, Pilar Ortega and Andrés Peña and who has worked in the country’s main tablaos. The other important port receiving this tradition is Barcelona, birthplace of Eva Santiago, a bailaora who has mastered the flamenco dress with train like no other. Her career has been closely linked to the Carmen tablao and she has achieved an international profile, taking part in festivals and tours in countries like Germany, France and Japan.
